I needed to be independent

She started to laugh and went on a memory trip when she tried to teach me that as a teenager.

For eighteen years I lived with my parents. Mom and dad handled everything and all I had to do was clean my room. If the laundry was in the laundry room, Dad was glad. When I went to school, I got a little more independence, but I still had my mom and dad to turn to. I took my dirty laundry home on weekends to have it washed and brought back clean clothes when I went back to school. When I graduated, I was suddenly thrusted into the real world. I blamed mom and dad for not forcing me to have independence and for my lack of responsibility. I then realized I was the one who depended on them, even though they sent me to a school that was half a state away. I had to figure out for myself that life wasn’t consistently going to be straight-forward and simple. I abruptly realized that I wasn’t prepared for life. I didn’t know what to do with a house. I called mom and asked him if she would walk me through how to change the air filter in the a/c unit. She started to laugh and went on a memory trip when she tried to teach me that as a teenager. She told me how to change the air filter and reminded me that I also had to have the Heating and Air Conditioning supplier do proper servicing on the a/c and the oil furnace. I groaned and asked if she could possibly remind me to call the Heating and Air Conditioning supplier. She told me to write it down on the calendar or to set a reminder in my cell phone.
