Can’t depend on my parents anymore

For eighteen years I lived with my parents.

Mom and dad always took care of everything and all I had to do was clean my room.

If the laundry was in the laundry room, mom was glad. When I went to school, I got a little more independence, but I still had mom and dad to turn to for everything. I took my laundry home on weekends, and brought back clean clothes when I went back to school. When I graduated, I was thrown into the real world. I blamed mom and dad for not forcing me to have independence and for my lack of responsibility. I then realized I was the one who depended on them, even though they sent me to a school that was half a state away. I had to figure out for myself that life wasn’t always going to be easy and that I needed to do things on my own. I suddenly realized that I wasn’t prepared for life. I didn’t know what to do with a house at all. I called dad and asked him if he would walk me through how to change the air filter in the air conditioning unit. He started to laugh and went on a memory trip when he tried to teach me that as a teenager. He told me how to change the air filter and reminded me that I also had to have the Heating and A/C supplier do regular servicing on the air conditioning and the gas furnace units. I groaned and asked if he could possibly remind me to call the Heating and A/C dealer so I wouldn’t forget. He told me to write it down on the calendar or to set a reminder in my phone. I had to remember to do it all on my own.
