She knew they wanted to live in a senior center in a warmer part of the country. So, her thought was they’d sell the cabin. But, her grandparents had plans for it, and this involved Melisa. They asked her to visit them in the cabin one weekend and laid out the plan. Since she lived close by, she’d take care of the house and rent it out to people visiting the area. Before Melisa could start the business, though, she had to take care of a few things, including the heating system. Her grandparents said the heat pump had been acting up and now warming the house as they were used to before. But, since they were leaving, it was up to Melisa to find a solution for the cabin heat pump. She asked her grandfather for the age of the heat pump in case the heating corporation asked. He informed Melisa that it was almost 16 years old. What? Melisa was too stunned to reply, so she made a point to call the heating corporation to do an assessment. She wanted to know if the heat pump was in good working condition or if it was time to replace it. A day after placing the phone call, a heating system technician arrived at the cabin to assess the heat pump. The moment he found out the age of the heat pump, he informed Melisa it was time to get a new heating system for the cabin. Failure to do so would mean paying hefty energy and repair bills each month.
