There Was No Ventilation For The Dryer

When I first moved into my townhome, I noticed that there was a lot of moisture being trapped in the hallway upstairs.

  • I ran the air conditioning system at a reasonable temperature and it seemed to run efficiently.

I also never received unusually high utility bills, but I couldn’t figure out what was causing so much moisture to build up in that hallway. I brought up the moisture to my husband one afternoon, and he agreed to take a look at the issue. After tinkering around in that area, he told me that the moisture was probably coming from the dryer. Our washer and dryer were stationed inside a small cabinet in the hallway. Because of this, there was no ventilation to the outside, causing all the moisture from the heated dryer to get trapped in that area. After doing some research, I discovered that this was a common issue for laundry rooms in townhomes. Because a townhome was usually stationed in between other homes, there was no place for dryer ventilation. When the dryer heated up, it would “sweat” and create moisture along the walls and door. To cut back on the humidity, I decided to leave the doors to the washer and dryer open whenever running the dryer. I thought this would move the hot air. I also decided to add a small dehumidifier to the hallway with hopes that it would suck the moisture out of the air. Unfortunately, there was no way we could add ventilation to the closet due to the location of the washer and dryer in the townhome.
