Plantar fasciitis caused by running in cheap sneakers

Running barefoot has proven to help the health of my feet

When I was first married, my husband and I managed on a tight budget. There was no extra funds available for a gym membership or exercise gear. Since keeping fit was a priority of mine, I began running every day for exercise. This offered the ideal way to workout without spending any money. I could get by without specially designed clothing. I didn’t have expensive pants or jackets to wick away moisture or protect against chill or heat. I ran in the pouring rain, in snow and no matter how severe the temperature outside. I gradually increased my pace and added distance to my runs. I discovered new routes around the area. I could not afford to purchase specialized running shoes. I made do with a cheap pair of sneakers that I’d found on sale at Walmart. They were the same sneakers I used for everyday walking around. They didn’t feature any type of arch support and the tread on the bottom had worn smooth. I eventually suffered problems with my feet. It was really painful. My arches felt as if they were tearing open with every step. The pain extended from my toes to my heels and gradually travelled up my calves. I found out that this is called plantar fasciitis. It forced me to quit running for a while. I combatted the pain by icing my feet, resting them, stretching my muscles and taking ibuprofen. For nearly a year, the pain was so severe that I had difficulty walking and sleeping. I was extremely frustrated about no longer being able to run. My feet finally healed. After a lot of research, I decided to attempt running barefoot. I made myself a smooth dirt path circling the perimeter of my property. I make sure that the path is always free of sticks, rocks and anything that might injure my feet. Running barefoot has proven to help the health of my feet. I am now able to run without pain.
