Traveling for work and still working out

My job causes me to travel a lot.

  • I’m often on the road more days a month than I am at home.

I spend most of my time waiting in airport terminals, sitting on airplanes and navigating rental cars. I sleep in hotel rooms, attend work-related meetings and eat at various restaurants. I enjoy my job, but realize my lifestyle isn’t overly healthy. It’s important to me that I stay in good physical condition. I realize how easy it would be for me to put on weight, deal with aches and pains and fall into sedentary habits. I’ve had to find proactive ways to be physically active. I did some research into the different fitness centers that are part of a national chain. Once I became a member of one, I could workout at any of the many locations. The one I chose offers 24/7 access. I simply use an app on my phone to get in and out. This is especially helpful for me. Whenever possible, I choose a hotel situated nearby one of these fitness centers. I often need to take care of my workout very early in the morning or super late at night. I don’t mind because the gym is rarely busy during those hours. I always have easy access to the treadmills, rowing machines, ellipticals, stair climbers and various stationary bikes. I like to lift weights and always take the time to stretch. The current locker rooms are a bonus. The showers included at the fitness centers are usually way better than what I deal with at my hotel. There’s a lot more water pressure and bigger and softer towels. I always feel refreshed after I’ve completed a strenuous workout. Now and then, I travel to an area where I can’t visit my fitness center. It’s not too big of a deal, because I make sure to pack a yoga mat, resistance bands and my jump rope. With very limited space, I am able burn a ton of calories, elevate my heart rate and work up a sweat.
