You would never know it by looking at her, but my mother is pretty famous in certain circles. She is a makeup artist, one that has worked on several different Oscar nominated films. She can do beauty makeups on stars, or convincing aging makeups for when a young actor needs to play an old character. She has an aw-shucks, girl-next-door charm about her, very down to earth, so you would never guess that several famous people know her by name. In her own way, she helped me find my career in HVAC repair, just by being her assistant. You may not know this, but climate control is extremely important in the world of fashion and special effects makeup. For the makeup to look its best and most natural, the skin needs to be clean and dry, so without climate control and temperature moderation the deck is stacked against you. I started learning how to troubleshoot HVAC problems when accompanying my mother to work some days, partially just to have something to do. It turns out that I was good at it, and the air conditioner always ran perfectly when I was on the set. Some years later when I had my HVAC certification I went back to that same studio and was given a job as a specialist with the makeup department. I focused only on heating and cooling systems, but was available on set, every set, to make sure the makeup could be applied smoothly. I know I only got the job because of who my mom is, but I still love the HVAC work!
