I work in an old factory building that has been around since the 1930s. The building is falling apart everywhere. Half of the plumbing doesn’t work and the electric box is constantly blowing up. The place is a complete and total death trap, but the city hasn’t condemned the building yet. After the roof collapsed, things changed drastically. I wasn’t working on the day that the accident occurred, but a couple of my co-workers and friends told me about the roofing problem. Everyone was working on the front line when they heard a loud sound in the back of the building. They came to the back of the building and there was rubble and dust everywhere. It looked like something landed on top of the building. There was a huge hole in the ceiling and you could see the trees, the birds, and the blue sky. The owner of the factory contacted a commercial roofing company and they found out that there were several parts of the roof that were no longer intact or up to code. The entire roof had to be replaced. Now the owner of the factory is scurrying around trying to find a commercial roofing company that will do the work cheaply. The factory can’t reopen until the roofing work has been completed and every day that the factory doesn’t run the guy is losing a ton of money. Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about getting paid. We are part of the ironworkers union and our contract states that we still get paid if the factory is shut down for mechanical reasons.
