A weight lifting memorial service

I had a mini-reunion with the men from the private school football team the other evening.

It was after the memorial repair for Riley, who used to be the strongest of us all! Those afternoons are twenty years gone, but they are still so fresh in my mind.

Playing private school football was a great time in my life, and Riley was a massive part of that. Gathering for his funeral was the first time we had all been together in years, so we decided to sneak off and meet at the outdated private school gym. The people I was with and I had a lot of great memories in that gym, and so it was the perfect venue for our own private memorial to Riley. Back in the afternoon we used weight lifting not only as a way to prove who was strongest, but as a way to bond, later we would upgrade this kind of friendly athletic competition with drinking contests, but my fondest memories are of weight lifting, but riley was a play even though he also considered himself our personal trainer, because his Mom was a gym coach and he knew all the tricks and strategies. Even our own head coaching staff for the team couldn’t compete with Riley, and we took all of our health and nutritional advice from Riley. So here we gathered in the weight room in the back of the gym, but instead of getting wasted or stoned, we decided to take off our suits and lift some weights in his honor. I had not done any weight lifting in years, but it felt good.
